Good news for free online storage and hosting

PC World tested some online storage for their June 2006 issue. Streamload Mediamax looked like a possibility for our purposes. We can upload and host files so they can be linked from our blog. We ave an account with the usual user name and password.
Their sales pitch:
Want to share lots of big files in addition to videos? Try Streamload Mediamax, a storage site that gives you 25GB of free online storage and permits file uploads up to 25MB.

PC Worlds rating and review"
Rating: 81 Very Good

You get a huge amount of storage space and excellent media streaming, but downloads and sharing are limited with the free plan, as is maximum file size (paid plan limits are higher).

You can also try IBackup for Windows with which you can perform interactive backup and restore and also schedule regular online backups. PC World has recently rated IBackup as the `best all-around backup’ service in its review of similar online services.

IBackup for Windows transfers only modified portions of files and folders to ensure that backups are quick. You can receive email notifications for your scheduled backups by choosing the relevant options. You can keep the 'Mirror Path' option (default) to duplicate the entire source path for backups.

Using IDrive you can map an IBackup account as a network drive on the user's computer. You can drag-and-drop and edit files in the IBackup account from the explorer like view, as if you are sitting in front of it directly. It also allows users to open and save files stored in their IBackup online backup/ storage accounts directly from their associated applications like Microsoft Office. IBackup also have options to manage the scheduled backups and restore without the need to even logging into the application.

Besides advanced block level patching, encryption, synchronization, advanced logging and reporting, users can backup MS SQL Server databases without interrupting running MS SQL Server services. One really good feature is snapshots which allows the account holder to see the files stored in the IBackup account during the previous days.

IBackup for Quicken performs near real time backup of recently modified 'Quicken/ QuickBooks' files to your IBackup account. Use IBackup Professionall as its encryption is based on a user-defined key so that the data stored on IBackup Professional servers cannot be decrypted by anybody other than you. The data files backed up using IBackup Professional are encrypted on transmission using industry standard 128-bit SSL. The backed data is again stored in the encrypted form with 256-bit AES and only you can decrypt it.

So the advantages of using IBackup are many. To know more, you can try their free trial.

I have been part of the Streamload family since January of 2002. I remember back when I first purchased an account, I loved the service. Friendly, reliable, easy to use, pretty much perfect. I was able to upload all of my music, photos, and hosted web site material onto the servers with ease, and never had a problem accessing it. Now they have come out with the new MediaMax service and it has all gone downhill. They promised us faster servers for quicker uploads, and more features which will help us better organize our accounts. All they have done is ruined something good. The servers are slower than ever, uploads time out almost every time, and files uploaded previous to the new software have mysteriously disappeared. They assure us nothing was lost, but it has been over a month now since I have been able to access some files. They promise people are working around the clock to fix the problems with the switch over, however, no one responds to support e-mails and they just keep dishing out broken promises to fix everything. Only 8 people work for this company, so don't ever expect much. They have a blog for people to post problems, but are rare to respond to a lot of people, and sometimes even go the length to delete comments from the blog all together so they don't look bad. Unless something drastic happens and they magically fix everything sometime soon, I would expect that you will be hearing many more negative comments about this unprofessional service. You would be better off buying your own domain and hosting the files on your own web site. I also forgot to mention that the search feature doesn't even work after a month of them saying they were going to fix it. I receive and host many files, in many directories, and can not find anything because of this. Also, the "Lockers" or tabs that the author was talking about, don't even work. Out of the thousands of files I have stored in my account, only about 5% show up. In order to be able to stream your audio from the site now, you must select the song from the Music Locker rather than the File manager, but since none of the songs show up, I guess Streaming audio from streamload is gone for now too. They also made downloading and storing messages two totally different things for some reason, which means instead of moving and sorting files directly from your inbox to any directory, you now have to save them to MediaMax, and then move to your desired location. If you are like me and get photo and video submissions every day, it takes twice as long to do now and is a very painful process. They also added an extra screen in between viewing your files and downloading them. You can no longer just click "download" directly from the e-mail, you must click download, and then go to a page to confirm how you want to download the files.
